Welcome to the second annual Center Hill Lake Visitor Guide. What fun the Burckhard family has had exploring this beautiful region! We love to take day trips and explore the hills, valleys and small towns of the Center Hill Lake area and have found some treasures to share with you. One of our much loved pastimes is hiking and one of our favorites this winter has been hiking to the foot of the Burgess Falls waterfall. Burgess Falls State Natural Area encompasses several cascading waterfalls that reach a crescendo as you hike down to the bottom of the trail to the spectacular granddaddy of them all. Winter and spring hiking is phenomenal in the Upper Cumberland with countless trails and waterfalls to experience. The festivals and events around the Center Hill Lake area are also lots of fun. Nearly every weekend, one can find something to do at one of the marinas, often including live bands and entertainment. Take a look at what is new at the marinas on pages 7 and 9. There you will learn that a lot is new at Hidden Harbor Marina with their new ship’s store and fun and sassy pontoon boats. At Edgar Evins Marina, they have their new restaurant manager Sheri Cairns and Chef Tokyo who will tantalize you with their all new menu, gourmet coffees, scrumptious desserts, muffins and scones. Hurricane Marina continues to host their popular shrimp boils on the last Friday each month. Their fabulous Halloween costume party is the place to be on Halloween night. Edgar Evins State Park has many events, but the Burckhards loved the History Hayride which captured a lot of the local history of the past hundred years (and beyond), giving visitors an idea of what things were like in previous times through period dress and stories plus live demonstrations. My favorite characters were the elusive moonshiner, the salesperson and listening to stately “Edgar Evins”. The Smithville Jamboree is the granddaddy event of the year featuring a weekend bluegrass competition on the downtown square of Smithville. It brings thousands of folks from all over the country to compete. American Idol at Center Hill Lake! They also have hundreds of craft booths, live demonstrations, food and more. Other favorites are the Spring Fling and Christmas events at the Appalachian Center for Craft which showcases some tremendous art, crafts and handmade treasures that this acclaimed art center produces. Lakeside Resort continues to be one of the favorite places to gather with the whole family for vacations, weddings, and family reunions. The views from the resort are magnificent and the service that Lakeside offers is unparalleled. Center Hill Lake continues to be the playground for Nashvillians and is a favorite for weekend getaways, vacation homes and retirement. Edgar Evins Marina captured the prestigious and coveted Corps of Engineers “Clean Marina Award” last summer. This makes them the first marina on CHL to earn this award. Center Hill Lake continues to also be a favorite for fishermen with its 415 miles of shoreline and deep waters. Rent a houseboat or pontoon for the weekend, bring your boat down to one of the many accessible ramps to launch, or just spend the weekend at a cabin or campground and enjoy the beauty, splendor and fun of this magnificent playground. Tubing, swimming, jet skiing, wakeboarding or just floating on a raft enjoying a good book, are great ways to enjoy aquatic fun. I would be remiss, if I didn’t mention the beauty of autumn. Winding through the hilly countryside is fantastic and one of the best times to come is during the “Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour” which allows you to visit some of the best artists and craftspeople in the southeast to see their works. Some of the stops are at the artists’ studios and it features many art genres. Visit www.offthebeatenpathtour.com for the 2011 tour details and view some of the artist who will showcase their masterpieces. Center Hill Lake is a treasure both on and off the lake. There is plenty to see and do. We hope that this visitor guide will take you off the beaten path, expose you to some new restaurants, new shops and events which will keep you coming back throughout the year. Every season is great at Center Hill Lake and even if you come for a day, you are sure to have a wonderful time. Enjoy your visit! The Burckhard Family
